Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has quickly pulled its documentary series, “Hila Beyond the Taliban,” from all streaming platforms.

The move comes after news broke that Khadija Ahmadzada, a teacher featured in the show, was arrested by the Taliban.

The network isn’t taking any chances with the lives of the women who appeared on screen.

Safety has become the only priority as the situation in Afghanistan grows more dangerous for those who speak out.

They’ve removed the content from NPO Start and NL Ziet to prevent further risk to those involved.

Khadija Ahmadzada and her father were taken on January 13 in the Herat Province.

The Taliban intelligence service is currently holding them, which has sparked immediate international worry.

During the documentary, Ahmadzada was very brave and spoke out about the daily oppression women face under the current regime.

Another journalist named Nazira Rashidi was also detained, though the broadcaster says she wasn’t part of the film.

The UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights, Richard Bennett, is now calling for their immediate release.

It’s still not 100% clear if the arrest is directly linked to her time on camera, but the timing is very suspicious.

This move shows the serious danger of doing journalism in countries where free speech simply doesn’t exist.

In the Netherlands, the media community is watching closely to see how AVROTROS handles this frightening situation.

Since the 2021 takeover, the rights of girls have been slowly taken away month by month.

Women in the country now can’t travel or drive without a man to watch over them at all times.

They aren’t even allowed to speak or sing in public places anymore under new strict laws.

Employment has been cut off for most women, leaving families in a tough spot as they struggle to survive.

Some experts say the international community needs to do much more than just release angry statements.

Analysts warn that if media companies stop filming entirely, the world will lose sight of these human rights struggles.

The International Criminal Court is already looking into these actions as potential crimes against humanity.

Warrants were put out for two Taliban leaders last year because of how they treat women and girls.

For now, Hila Noorzai and the AVROTROS team are staying quiet to keep everyone safe during this crisis.

We’ll have to wait and see if global pressure can change the outcome for Khadija and her family.
